Ford Escape: Seat Belt Defect Can Cause Latch to Fail

December/January 2004

Ford Motor Company is recalling 130,000 Ford Escape sport-utility vehicles because of a defect that can cause the driver's and front-seat passenger's seat belts to fail to latch.

The recall covers 2001 model Escapes. There has been one injury reported as a result of the defect. A plastic part in the seat belt latch can break and cause the belt either to fail to lock or to engage only partially.

Ford has informed dealers of the recall and plans to mail letters to Escape owners next month.
