15 Passenger Van Rollover Accidents

Nearly 500 people have been killed and hundreds seriously injured in rollover crashes involving large vans in the past ten years, according to government reports.

Fifteen passenger vans represent a very high rollover risk. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the risk is anywhere from three to six times that of regular vehicles. The agency states that 15 passenger vans have a rollover risk that dramatically increases if the number of people traveling in the van increases. 15 passenger vans, with 10 occupants, have a rollover rate more than three times that of lightly loaded vans. When carrying 15 passengers,
the vans are nearly six times as likely to roll over.

These vans are designed for a driver 14 passengers and widely used by churches, colleges and community organizations to take people on short trips, sporting events and outings. Additionally many businesses use the vans to transport commuters.

The risk of rollovers in fully loaded vans is created by a high center of gravity, making the vans more likely to roll in evasive or sudden maneuvers. These vans can be very difficult to control in emergency situations or where the driver must react quickly.

Nearly, 500,000 of these vans are used throughout the country. Most are Ford models.

Models at Risk Include:

Ford Econoline (E-Series)
Ford E350
Club Wagon E350
Dodge Ram Wagon B350
Ram Van Wagon B3500
Chevrolet Express 3500
GMC Savana 3500
